Microsoft Surface is cool, sure, but it could be even cooler if it took inspiration from another division of the company. That’s what we thought after seeing Bastian Broecker’s amazing coffee table that uses Microsoft’s Kinect sensor, infrared lasers, a PlayStation Eye, and head tracking software to create a 3D augmented reality experience. The effect is best understood by watching the video below, but basically the Kinect is being used to track the user’s head and move the 3D environment in tandem, and there are four lasers at each corner that work with the PlayStation Eye camera to detect finger motion. The result is an AR block building program that looks for all the world like the hands-on future of Minecraft.
