The European Union's "One charger for all" program has major phone manufacturers agreeing to standardize on a common charging plug: Micro USB. Apple joined on with the agreement back in June of 2009 and today, after the release of the iPhone 4S, it's made good on that commitment -- in a way. No, Apple is not moving away from its 30-pin connector, but instead will be offering a Micro USB adapter that will enable both syncing and charging. It will be compatible with the iPhone 3G, 3Gs, iPhone 4, and iPhone 4S.
Apple releases Micro USB adapter for iPhone
At £8.00, we'd say the iPhone adapter conforms to the letter of the common charger agreement, if not the spirit. However, it's possible that Apple will bundle the connector with all iPhones sold in the EU. We'll know for sure on October 14th, when both the iPhone 4S and the adapter are released.
